paris cutlery A set of cutlery should last a lifetime. Generally, a setting consists of a seven pieces: a dinner knife and fork, a dessert knife, fork & spoon, a soup spoon and a teaspoon. Ideally, your selection should allow you to expand your setting as you wish to include a butter knife, cheese knife, fish knife and fork, and all manner of servers.

considerations

As with dinnerware, consider the pattern, care and materials, as well as how it feels in your hand.

You may choose simple cutlery for everyday meals plus something more formal, but still easy to maintain, for special occasions. Today a seven piece setting is adequate for most meals. And it's perfectly acceptable to add utensils that don't match your set - mix your family silver with every day stainless steel.

materials & care
Many different materials are available which can inspire you to be creative in setting your table. Most of the Bay Tree's cutlery range is made of 18/10 stainless steel, which contains 18% chrome and 10% nickel. This is the best composition of stainless steel available. The high percentage of chrome gives strength and durability, the nickel provides enhanced lustre. This composition most closely approximates polished silver but provides a maintenance free finish and is dishwasher safe.

Some cutlery is made of silver plate, an affordable, dishwasher safe alternative to sterling silver. These pieces are made of stainless steel coated with a layer of silver. If used regularly, they do not require polishing; otherwise a quick application of metal polish will restore their lustre.

Stainless steel only needs a minimum of care. However some precautions should be taken when washing in the dishwasher:
- do not use too much powder
- do not mix with ordinary steel items
- ensure enough rinsing agent is used.

The Bay Tree recommends...
We recommend that you start by choosing the same number of cutlery settings as dinnerware, plus serving spoon and fork, tarte server, butter and pate knife, cheese knife, and a soup ladle.

To begin with, you may like to order double the number of dessert forks to save having to wash up between courses (they can be used for entrées).
